CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION IN SALE
Our school is a place of faith and learning
Dear Parents and Families,
This Wednesday, we remembered those men and women who sacrificed their lives to bring peace to our world. I thank our Year 6 leaders who led the school in an online reflection for Remembrance Day. We discussed the importance of being instruments of God’s peace and our ability to make a difference in our homes, school and community through co-operating with others, being safe and respectful. At this time, we particularly remember our defence families within our school community, particularly those families where a parent, or relative, have served or are serving a duty overseas to ensure peace in communities where there is conflict. We thank them sincerely for their efforts and sacrifice.
NAIDOC WEEK
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Australians. We welcome the opportunity to celebrate the stories and contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We acknowledge our own students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent and the stories and culture they share with us at St Thomas’
Student Leaders 2021
A number of children in Year Five are currently preparing letters of application for the Student Leader positions available in 2021. Letters are due next Monday and will be read by panel members prior to interviews. Those interviewed will be shortlisted and asked to prepare speeches to share with the student community before online voting takes place. We wish all our candidates the very best.
End of Year Celebrations
At present, end of year activities need to be held onsite and are limited to students and staff on school grounds. All events will need to comply within the current guidelines that exist around “Permitted Activities”. These guidelines continue to evolve and we will do our best to ensure there is opportunity to celebrate 50 years of Catholic Education, Christmas festivities and Year 6 Graduation. Individual classes will inform families of plans, as there are restrictions regarding whole school and year level assemblies and gatherings. Again, we thank families for their support.
Transition Days
We continue to run our orientation sessions for our Foundation 2021 students. We enjoy meeting each of the children and have valued the opportunity to meet them in smaller numbers.
Our last session will be held next Friday and staff will then look at finalising class groupings.
Enrolments
Enrolment numbers continue to increase across the school with quite a few students on waiting lists for 2021. This term we will have five new children start their schooling at St Thomas’.
We welcome them and their families to St Thomas’.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend,
Anita & Staff

This week in PE for NAIDOC Week students explored the Aboriginal term for playing, “yulunga” and enjoyed participating in a variety of traditional indigenous games. Foundation students enjoyed learning the ‘Wombat Wobble’ dance by Johnny Huckle and Helen Moran. Our middle and senior students explored the traditional games of ‘Chiba’, ‘Emu’, ‘Kai Wed’ and ‘Kabi Kabi Buroinjin’. Students discussed the importance of Naidoc week and identified numerous Indigenous athletes like; Ash Barty, Patty Mills and Cathy Freeman who have all made significant contributions to Australian sport.
Is your family leaving St Thomas' in 2020?
We ask families to notify the school if they are planning not to return in 2021. We have a number of children on waiting lists across year levels and are working towards confirming class sizes for 2021. Families are asked to contact reception via email or phone.

We would like to remind all families under instruction by the Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited, for any students who are being tested for COVID-19 and have siblings who attend the school, the siblings should also remain at home until a negative test result is provided for the student awaiting a test result.
NAIDOC WEEK 8 - 15 NOVEMBER
Join the celebration!
Sunday 8 November marks the beginning of NAIDOC Week, a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, languages and histories. This week is a time to listen and learn from the voices and stories of First Nations Peoples - who are part of the oldest living cultures on the planet.
This year’s theme, Always Was, Always Will Be, encourages us to celebrate the true history of our country. For over 65,000 years, this land has been lived on and looked after by First Nations Peoples. We encourage everyone to take this week as an opportunity to acknowledge our shared past, and look together towards the future.
Our Foundation is celebrating with a stunning video montage with submissions from First Nations Peoples and a series of interviews with three inspiring Indigenous personalities. Plus we have put together a list of how you can get involved including recommended reading, videos and films to watch, events to attend and learning resources.
We look forward to celebrating NAIDOC Week with you.
