Our school is a place of faith and learning
Dear Parents and Families,
We welcome all our students back to school and pray that our term continues without interruption.
CONGRATULATIONS
I would like to congratulate Grace Duffield for all her preparation, ensuring the Athletics Day ran smoothly yesterday. It was a great day and an opportunity for children to reconnect with their friends and to build team spirit. We were delighted that we could continue with our sports day as planned, with children practising their skills in the lead up to the day. We are waiting for School Sports Victoria to confirm whether the district event will still go ahead.
To all our children, thank you for a wonderful day. I hope you enjoy the photos shared with you.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
As announced last week, DOSCEL and the Diocese of Sale are looking at the opportunity to refurbish and repurpose the buildings at the Sion Convent site located on Raglan st.
The possibility of moving our students to a refurbished school building and grounds is being considered by DOSCEL. There are many conversations to be had regarding the feasibility of moving to the site and all parties involved in decision making, will seek to keep our school community informed throughout the process. We look forward to discussing all possibilities.
For those who may not be aware, the Sion Sisters are very much a part of our school story, with Sr Theresa Condon being the first principal of St Thomas' almost fifty one years ago and Sr Mary Lotton and Sr Marie Johnson contributing to our story also. The parish saw a need for another Catholic primary school within the Sale community and the sisters of Sion were open to supporting this need. The Allman family donated the current land to the parish for this purpose and St Thomas’ was built as a sister school to St Mary's.
Sr Elizabeth Allman, a Sion sister, served as the principal of Our Lady of Sion Secondary School for many years and I am sure she is remembered by many past students for her contribution to Catholic education. We have the Allman family currently represented within our school community.
We pray for all those who are to lead us through this process of exploring opportunities. May they be guided by the Holy Spirit in all their decisions to seek the best outcome for the children of St Thomas’. May we as a school community be open to all possibilities, humbled to be considered for this proposed project. Whatever the outcome, we look forward to working with all parties concerned.
We ask God’s blessing upon our school community.
Grant us the will to work together, the wisdom to listen to each other’s views and the insight to plan together, in recognition of our role in supporting one another.
Help us to build a school that supports the development of each individual child,
fulfills the mission of Christ to love and serve others and in doing so, respects the local community and contributes to it.
CONGRATULATIONS
This weekend we wish past student, Charlie Comben, all the very best as he makes his debut for the North Melbourne Footy Club. Charlie has been acknowledged as one of the most hardworking, resilient members of the team, and we are extremely proud of him and this achievement.
Charlie is the son of Viv Comben. We know how proud Viv was of his achievements and both her boys. We wish Charlie the very best this weekend.
We fondly remember Viv and her work here at St Thomas’.
CHILD SAFETY
Thank you to all our children and families for responding to our COVID Safe Management plans.
We see many of our younger students growing quite confident in making their way into school each morning. Thank you to their siblings for supporting them as well.
We really appreciate your support in checking in with QR codes when necessary, wearing masks and socially distancing. We know this can be a challenging time for you all.
Enjoy your weekend,
Anita and Staff

Athletics Carnival
Yesterday our students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day out to compete and participate in the annual athletics carnival. In this ever-changing climate it was great to finally have the opportunity to run this event for our kids, particularly as they have been training and preparing for each of the athletics events. The age champions and House shield will be presented next week. The SSV District Athletics carnival has been rescheduled for Tuesday 7th of September, we will be working very hard as a District to make sure this goes ahead for our local schools. We look forward to hosting our Junior Athletics Carnival next term when the weather is warmer and hopefully restrictions are eased to allow parents and spectators on-site. A big thank you to all of the St Thomas’ staff for making yesterday a great success.
Grace Duffield
Each class had the opportunity to participate in their class spelling bee this week. All students demonstrated great resilience and we were very proud to see friends cheering one another on. All participants have helped to gain points for their House. Congratulations to our winners who will compete in a Year Level Final next Thursday.
